Within their specified measurement range, LVDT sensors provide excellent linearity. They are capable of detecting very small changes in position and have virtually unlimited resolution. As a result, LVDT sensors are also suitable for measuring high accelerations and high measurement cycles.

The Solar Boat Team of TU Delft implemented a FD60 draw-wire sensor (string pot) into a hydrogen powered boat that uses hydrofoils to 'fly'. The boat has wings underneath the boat. To position the wings the boat uses a draw-wire sensor connected to a steering plate that measures the steering angle.
